Lets talk about gas.

Gas stations.

As car owners we go to these lots, but not all are created equally. Some are laid out better then others.

This is a bad lay out: When it gets busy it spills on to the road, and for cars with gas caps on different sides its impossible when its busy. All cars where I live have gas caps on the drivers side, but that later.

Kinja'd!!!

This is a good one: The way the pumps are laid out is perfect. Your gas cap in either side? No problem. You can pull in only.

Kinja'd!!!

Gas Caps.

Like mention previously most gas caps where I live are on the drivers side, mine is on the passenger side. You think that would not be a big deal, BUT IT IS. When gas station #1 is busy & need gas I cause too much of a commotion trying to get gas. I have to pull in the wrong way ruining the flow. At gas station #2 its great, I can pull in w/o causing a commotion. Sure is costs more then #1, but beats having and angry mob of driver sided gas cap wanting to kill me.

Saying all that, gas caps should be all mandated to put one side.

They could just make the hose longer...

or they could put all gas caps on one side.

I’m really picky about where I get fuel.

First rule is, I try to avoid having to turn left out of the filling station. A lot of these are placed at intersections, so you could be waiting a long time to escape. (Of course that’s not so much a design flaw as it depends on the direction of my commute.)

Design-wise, the biggest turn-off for me is those old-time ones with no rain canopy. They’re not very common anymore, and for good reason.

There’s one near me that has a slightly steep driveway transition. I mean, it’s manageable, but it forces you to slow down and you have to rethink whether you really want to jump for that gap in traffic.

The gas cap should be on the driver’s side only. Either that or have a filler on both sides.

Sams Club and Costco both have long hoses so you can go on either side

This is a big problem?

This is not a big problem.

There’s a station near me that’s like #1, except it has three pumps in a row. Nobody is competent enough to use that middle pump.

Gas caps tend to be on the passenger side, from the point of few of the original market. Right? So right side on a German or French car, left side on a Japanese or Brittish car. The only cars I’ve had with gas caps on the driver side were Japanese.

Mines Japanese and on the passenger (right) side.

Remembering back to working at a gas station in highschool (so almost ten years ago) my experience is that most American vehicles have them on the driver’s (left) side. I’m pretty sure that’s still the case.

“All cars where I live have gas caps on the drivers side, but that later.”

The gas cap tends to be on the side that is opposite of the exhaust pipe.

So with my Ford Focus... the exhaust is on the driver’s side, which means the fuel door is on the passenger side.

It was the opposite way with the Mazda-Protege-based Ford Escorts I had in the past.

The gas station I go to is one-way. You can only pull in from one entrance. Most cars here have the cap on the driver’s side, and mine is on the passenger’s. That means while everyone waits in line I can breeze right up to the other side of the pump.

Being European I’m not too familiar with American cars. My company car, a Focus (Ford of Europe product), has it on the passenger (right) side.

Yeah, it would have to be bigger (there are bigger stations in Japan like this), but the main thing is the pumps hanging from the ceiling.

Imagine a larger American sized station with that setup. Make it tall enough, you could pull a semi underneath and fill it up with diesel.

A hose mod to one gas pump is a lot easier to make than switching half of every car’s gas tank from one side to the other. I imagine that to be a costly mod for very little benefit to the car owners (Read: They aren’t about to do that), vs a hose mod that immediately benefits every car that comes up to it.

Can we also talk about Oregon and how angry it makes me to not have the option to pump my own gas? Especially when the pimply-faced teen hoses the entire side of my freshly-waxed Miata down in gasoline? Nah, I’m too dumb and dangerous to pump it myself...

Chrysler puts them on the drivers side, Audi on the passenger side. Gm is passenger side as well I believe.

Must be a European thing. The Focus over here has it on the passenger side as well, I’m pretty sure, but it’s a European design still. Most of the GM rebadgings from overseas also have it on the passenger side. But those are the only examples I can think of, except for my Niva, which is definitely European.
